What is Reiki

Reiki is a natural healing system, originating in Japan that uses variable frequency electromagnetic energy to heal on all levels, whether it is physical, emotional or spiritual.

Reiki as we know it was originally referred to as the 'Usui System of Natural Healing' or 'Usui do' (Way of Usui) and was discovered by Mikao Usui in the early 1900s. Today it is used to describe a whole variety of healing systems, some of which have no relation to the founder whatsoever. We like to call it active Reiki because in the true style of the founder, Mikao Usui, we use Reiki to work directly on conditions.

How does Reiki work

Reiki is very simple both to practise and to learn. The energy in Reiki consists of Universal energy and Ki (or life force energy). To be healthy Ki needs to flow freely throughout the body. When we develop an illness or injury our flow of Ki is interrupted causing ill health.

Reiki can be used passively or actively. Passive healers purely act as a channel for the energy, allowing it to flow through them without treating conditions directly. Passive Reiki healers believe that this allows the body to heal itself slowly over a period of time. Active Reiki, as used by the founder, Mikao Usui, directs the frequency and amplitude of the energy to work directly on the presenting condition(s). The
Reiki practitioner uses intention and visualisation to maximise the healing effects. This has much faster results than passive Reiki and means that active Reiki can be used to treat all conditions.

History of Reiki
There are many theories regarding the history of Reiki and of the founder, Mikao Usui, but the only documentary evidence we have available is from the writings and teachings of Mikao Usui, passed down to his students, and also information placed on his memorial stone in Japan by his Reiki students.

Reiki was discovered by Mikao Usui in the early 1900s after embarking on a 21 day retreat of fasting, meditating, chanting and praying on Mount Kurama in Japan. Mikao Usui started by helping his family and the poor people of Kyoto with Reiki and later practised from his clinic in Tokyo. As his fame spread throughout Japan Mikao Usui taught Reiki classes nationwide. For the rest of his years Mikao Usui
dedicated his life to the teaching of Reiki and Reiki healing.
